Victory Children - Benin

Project Detail | Partner Supported

Welcome!  If you are responding to the email from Cassie Sherman and Katherine Nehring please click here to support this project. Thank you.

The program supports orphans at school, through providing them with school fees, school supplies, uniforms, and follow-up visits, as well as the creation of a study center for weekly tutoring sessions and a nutritious meal. The initial partner, Victory Way, will serve 330 orphans and vulnerable children in the greater Parakou of northern Benin, ranging in age from approximately 5 to 18.

$120 = full support for 1 child for a year (food, clothing, academic support + tutoring)

Here in the words of a Peace Corps volunteer working with Victory Way is a glimpse of the experience of conducting a census of children in need of assistance:in Parakou:

"At first all the kids look the same - short hair, khaki uniforms, lots of energy - and then you notice that some of the kids are wearing uniforms that are too big, too small, unwashed, or in bad repair.  Some of them are dirty themselves, which is (at least in the morning, before the kid's had a chance to run around in the dust!) a sign of serious neglect.  In a culture where cleanliness is of such importance that it's an insult to even speak to an elder before you've washed your face in the morning, if a child is coming to school unwashed,  you know something is wrong."
