AHOPE for Children
AHOPE for Children was established as a charitable corporation in Washington State in 2002 for the purpose of supporting a home for HIV positive children in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. AHOPE for Children was instrumental in the development of the Ethiopian NGO, AHOPE Ethiopia in July 2004. AHOPE Ethiopia is a humanitarian local non-governmental organization that provides specialized care for HIV positive orphans with the goal of making the lives of HIV positive orphans brighter and longer. AHOPE Ethiopia is currently taking care of 65 HIV positive orphans and has provided services to 85 children since its establishment in July 2004.
AHOPE Ethiopia provides holistic care for the children, including a special nutritious diet to help maintain health, clothing, follow-up on health issues, sanitation, educational support, psychological support/counseling, participation in traditional cultural events such as the Ethiopian New Year party, recreational activities and field trips. A staff teacher provides in-house preschool and kindergarten classes, oversees the homework of the older children and tutors children who need extra help. The older children attend local public schools. Local and international volunteers assist with education and recreation.
